Musings of a Consultant

An Update

Posted by in Technology

I have been busy. Very, very busy. The API is still coming but I’m not sure when! Functionally, it’s pretty much complete – there are just a few bits that need tweaking here and there. Hopefully i’ll get a chance to finish this off soon so that you can all start using it!

Just a quick update. Characters and their appearances in books and films have now been mapped – and boy was it a long task. I’ve made a sweeping decision that appearances, as well as mentions of a characters constitute them being associated with the book or film. For example, Algie (Neville’s great-uncle) doesn’t appear in the books or films but is mentioned in The Philosophers Stone as well as in The Order of the Phoenix. As such, Algie has been mapped to those two books. A future development point might…read more

Gryffindor! Jokes. I’m obviously a Ravenclaw. Just a quick one. Character data is now in the database! And, as an added extra, I’ve also added house data: { “house”: { “animal”: “Lion”, “colours”: “Crimson/Scarlet and Gold”, “common_room”: “Gryffindor Tower”, “element”: “Fire”, “founder”: { “character_id”: 60, “name”: “Godric Gryffindor”, “url”: “http://localhost:5000/characters/60″ }, “ghost”: { “character_id”: 189, “name”: “Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington”, “url”: “http://localhost:5000/characters/189″ }, “house_id”: 1, “name”: “Gryffindor”, “url”: “http://localhost:5000/houses/1″ } } I think ‘de Mimsy-Porpington’ has to be the best surname ever. And after a helpful tip from @phalt_, I’ve changed…read more

(Header Image by xxdulce) I have started building! I spent a decent portion of yesterday and today getting to grips with Python and Flask and the various features available from both. ‘Python and Flask?’ I hear you ask? Yes. Originally I decided I was going to build the PotterAPI using a MEAN stack. Having been introduced to Python and Flask, some of the features available really impressed me and got me excited so I have now decided to use these technologies instead! Much of yesterday was spent putting together the database holding all…read more

Who DOESN’T like Harry Potter. Harry Potter is the book series that got me into reading as a kid – I would spend hours, face pressed up against the pages, oblivious to the events going on around me. I was completely immersed in that world. So when @phalt_ released a RESTful API providing all the Star Wars data you’ve ever wanted (swapi.co) I thought, “Hmm. Maybe I’ll make an API about something I love!”. Thus, the Idea for the Potter API was born. But what data would I provide to people…read more

Hello, World.

Posted by in General

Every developer starts their journey by writing a ‘Hello World’ program so why should the first post of a blog be any different? So, without further ado – Hello World! My name is Adam Howell. I’m a Technical Consultant from The Isle of Wight living and working in London. As a technical consultant, you might be surprised to hear that I actually don’t get much of an opportunity to spend a whole lot of time on development work. As such, I have decided to start this blog as a way of musing on various topics…read more
